Theaccompanyingdocumentary,MoviesDreaminColor(2004),similarlytrackstheevolutionofcolorfrompainstakinghand-paintingofindividualframestothegorgeousresultsofthree-stripTechnicolorinthe1930s.Beforecolorcouldberepresenteddirectlyonfilmasphotographed,agreatmanydeadendswereattempted,suchasKinemacolor,whichgetssurprisinglyeffectiveresultsfromalternatingredandgreenframeswiththeappropriatefilters.There'salsoagooddescriptionofthetintingandtoningprocesses,clarifyingtheoftenconfusingdifferencesandpointingoutthatbothcouldbeusedatonce,dependingonthefilm. Evenwhenthereisadeterminationtohavefilm-basedcolor,theapproachwasnotclear.Mostabortiveattemptsusedanadditiveprocess,layeringcolorstoanimpracticalextent.Itwasn'tuntilquiteabitlaterthatasubtractivefilteringprocesswasarrivedattosimplifythecolorphotographysystem.Eventhen,therewereanumberofdifficultiesbeforeTechnicolorwasreadytotaketheworldbystorm.Andthedifferencesincolorqualityarecertainlystrikingenough;thespecimensarehighlyvariableintheireffectiveness,thoughmanyoftheprimitiveversionsaresurprisinglycolorful.Thetwodocumentariestogethertellataleofstruggletoarriveatverisimilitude,andthey'rewelldone.TheoneobjectionIhaveisthatasignificantchunkofboth,dealingwiththeearlymagiclanternera,utilizesthesameexamples,andthey'rethusabitrepetitivewhenseentogether.
